Rotating Door

1. Draw out a brush for the size you want your door. (See this tutorial if you don't know how to draw brushes.)

2. Press the Spacebar once to clone the door. This new brush will act as the door hinges, your door will rotate using the center of this brush as its pivot. Reduce its size and place it either side of the door, depending on which way you want it to open.

3. Apply the shader 'common/origin' to the cloned brush. (See this tutorial if you don't know how to apply textures/shaders.)

4. Select both brushes. Right-click on any of the 2D views, and choose 'func/func_door_rotating'.

***OPTIONAL***
5. With either brush selected, press N to open the Entities dialog box. The top window here should have 'func_door_rotating' selected, the middle window gives you information on what Keys/Values you can use, but it's the lowest window we're interested in. In the Key field type 'type', then press Tab to jump to the Value field and type '4', then press Enter. This will give your door a wooden creaking sound in the game. Different numbers make different sounds, see the middle window for the list (some don't work). There are also many other Keys listed you can test out, along with a brief description of their function, so go and experiment!

That's it! You can now go and test out your new door. (See this tutorial if you don't know how to compile and test maps.)

Fred commented at 21 Dec, 2003 - 14:18

Great, a tutorial on doors that open with levers would be good :)

IllegalX commented at 08 Nov, 2003 - 21:45

You need to give the brush that actes like the door hinges the texture thats under common and then origin... then it works

IllegalX commented at 05 Nov, 2003 - 13:12

Yeah I also had that bullshit of the dor that just goes out of the leven and back with noise. So what you say Vetinari, you just can put 1 door in and map?

tom commented at 01 Nov, 2003 - 22:04

how do you apply shaders? : (

Chronos commented at 30 Oct, 2003 - 22:56

How apply shaders??how select two shaders?? How select 'structural shader'??

Vetinari commented at 10 Oct, 2003 - 16:38

that happens if you have no origin brush, it rotates around the coordinates 0,0 of your map :P

SineTwo commented at 25 Sep, 2003 - 03:31

Ehm, me and a friend of mine has this problem. We've got a door, but when we open it, it just goes miles off the level, makes the sound, and after a while it comes back. I.e. it doesnt pivot 90 degrees around the hinge, it just flies off quite far :P

These tutorials are over 20 years old, probably rubbish, and I don't even remember writing them - but, if you desperately need to, you can shoot me a message @sqwirral on Twitter.
