Trace Map

1. Load up your map, making sure to use the devmap command. (See this tutorial if you don't know how to compile and test maps.)

2. When you're in game, press ` to open the console. Type '/developer 1' and press Enter, then type '/generatetracemap' and press Enter again. The engine will now start working on your command, and let you know of its progress.

That's it! You should now have the new tracemap in your '/maps' directory, with the filename 'yourmapname_tracemap.tga'.

Spawny: these coordinates really aren't square :)

Spawny commented at 16 Jan, 2004 - 15:42

Ok, first i put a scare brush under my entire map reading the coords on left top corner for mapcoordsmins and bottom right corner for mapcoordsmaxs and write it into the worldspawnentity like mapcoordsmins -12886 7665, mapcoordsmaxs -6778 5660 and compile it with bsp meta vis fast light faster (for testing). Start the game with developer 1 and devmap (sub, dust2, shack - selfmade maps) but the generateTracemap command doesn´t works. Everytime i get the console alert "mapcoords need to be square". I work with gtkradiand 1.3.8-et. Is it perhaps a EDITOR problem???

Kentyman: The tracemap is what you use to make the command map! Loof: Your map must be too flat , make cone points on when you makit it, then u will be sure were everything goes! Violator: You rename it 'mapname.TGA'

Violator commented at 29 Nov, 2003 - 12:50

Seemed to work, but how do I get it to work in game?

LooF commented at 20 Nov, 2003 - 03:10

I can make a tracemap no problem, but it's only showing very dark red in the shape of my map.

kentyman commented at 13 Nov, 2003 - 11:55

maybe something to add to this tutorial: what exactly is a trace map?

IllegalX commented at 08 Nov, 2003 - 21:42

Everthing is red, I know :-s also have that problem but I'm just staying editing it till ever single line is at the good place. I use Adobe Photoshop to edit my .tga files

Ok, after ages of it saying the map wasnt square i managed to get it but one problem, what program do i use to edit my TGA file?

AKE commented at 07 Nov, 2003 - 23:47

Hi, got aswell some trouble. There is just the red channel ofter generating. Did i do anything wrong?

IllegalX commented at 07 Nov, 2003 - 19:23

Hi... Generating tracemap works... Look the guy with that developer problem first type /developer 1 in the console (look at the steps (i) ) other guy with the square shit... You must have your mapcoordsmins something like 64 -64 and you mapcoordsmaxs like -64 64 if you do this you've square mapcoords...

Spawny commented at 01 Nov, 2003 - 15:27

Fuckin bullshit, the tracemap command didn`t work, i made several maps and the console says mapcoords need to be square. I put mapcoordmins and mapcoordmaxs in worldspawnentitys and the console print ever and ever mapcoords need to square. what is it that it doesn`t work

bobthedinosaur commented at 10 Oct, 2003 - 06:36

alright i do that, and i can find the tga file, which looks correct, but it still doesnt display in-game.. what am i missing?

ShOrtY22 commented at 06 Oct, 2003 - 19:40

i ve this problem when i write generatetracemap the console tolds me: Mapcoords needs to be square... i've made them square's what to do??? pliiizzz help!

ziege commented at 27 Aug, 2003 - 22:55

It sounds like you don't have the correct max & min mapcoords set, which is needed for the tracemap. Try steps 2 & 3 on this page: http://etmapping.andityler.com/compilingandtesting.php

Xerroz commented at 26 Aug, 2003 - 08:29

i often get all kinds of redtext and says error when i type /developer 1, and when i try /generateTracemap it says i dont have valid mapcoord..please help
